The Chilling Tale Of Chicago’S Resurrection Mary — Chicago, Il

Chapter I: The Early Decades

Right in the heart of the hustling, bustling city we know as Chicago, a series of chilling tales have taken root. They march out of the glorious jazz-spangled hay day of the 1930s and into modern folklore. Our protagonist’s tale, as tragic as it is spine-chilling, centers around the ethereal apparition known as Resurrection Mary.

Mary, a vibrant young woman in her prime, had the world at her feet. She had a beauty that could silence a room and a laugh that could fill it back up again. Her tale starts one whirlwind night in the illustrious Oh Henry Ballroom. She, entranced in dance with her beau, moved across the floor as if weightless. The two were a spectacle to spectators–a vision of young love, swaying beneath the low glow of Edison bulbs.

Chapter II: A Grave Departure

The tale, however, takes a sinister fold as a lovers’ spat escalated beyond their control. In her fury, young Mary decided to abandon the ball, to step into the pulsing heart of Chicago’s deadly night. Unbeknownst to her, this would be a decision that would not only end her life but begin her afterlife.

Amidst the chiaroscuro of city night and soaring overtones of jazz, a mechanical beast on wheels struck her down. There, on Archer Avenue, the waltzing girl met her untimely end. Her heartbroken parents draped her cold body in her beautiful dancing dress, the white fabric a bitter echo of the life inside her they couldn’t bring back. They buried her in Resurrection Cemetery, praying that perhaps she could find peace in the afterlife that was ripped from her in life.

Chapter III: Phantom Hitchhiker

The spirits of the afterlife, though, are notorious for refusing to rest. Mary’s tale did not end with her burial. A string of encounters, reported by lonely male drivers on Archer Avenue, painted a hauntingly firm portrait of the specter, seemingly risen from the grave.

These men reported the same eerie specter–a young woman, clad in a white dress, seeking companionship on the desolate roadside. They’d offer her a ride, and she’d accept, filling their cars with an uncanny chill which never seemed to lift. However, as soon as the vehicle would near her old grave, her presence would unexpectedly vanish, leaving behind only the ghost of her existence and an unnerving chill in the air.

Chapter IV: Dance of Shadows

The most chilling encounters, though, happened on the dance floor, in the same local ballrooms she once used to frequent as a mortal. Reports suggest that these men would dance with an enchanting woman in a white dress who felt disconcertingly cold. As the final chords of their dance would die away, she would disappear, vanishing without a trace. A chilling gust of wind would be the only evidence of her strange visit, leaving the unlucky partners in a state of eerie bewilderment.

Chapter V: The Endless Waltz

Thus, Resurrection Mary continues her posthumous existence, suspended between life and death. Hers is a mournful tale of unfinished business, of a life abruptly cut short and a spirit unable to move on. Her haunting presence on Archer Avenue and at local ballrooms serves as an undying testament to her untamed spirit, the cruel twist of fate, and the bone-chilling reality that perhaps, the line between our world and the afterlife is just a dance step away.

Even now, her white-dressed figure continues to dance through Chicago’s history, forever dooming her to repeat the last moments of her life and forever reminding us of the city’s most mesmerizing phantom. The tale of Resurrection Mary lives on, an eerie note long after the music has stopped, a chill that you can’t quite shake.

Mystery Of The Haunted Hull House — Chicago, Il

Part 1 – The History of Hull House

In the bustling heart of Chicago, nestled among the city’s highlights, stood a paradoxical vestige of a haunting past – the Hull House. This ageing structure, a stark contrast to the modern skyline, bore the heavy air of history, saturated with chilling fables of inexplicable encounters.

Brought into existence in 1856, by the businessman Charles Hull, this house was an embodiment of his vision, a marvelous sight until it fell into the grasp of eeriness. Hull had inhabited the house with his wife, Jenny Adams, who would mark the initiation of haunting murmurs surrounding the house; for her life was tragically cut short only a year after they ventured into their new life.

Whispers of the house holding a wicked curse rapidly gained momentum, creeping through the city’s alleyways, seeping into drawing-room discussions, and finally solidifying into an undeniable resonance of dread. The Hull House absorbed Jenny’s untimely departure like a sponge, becoming an architectural epitome of sinister happenings.

Part 2 – The Arrival of Jane Addams

As time plodded on, the ownership of the Hull House passed into the hands of Jane Addams. An exceptional woman of her time, Addams had entered the house with a touch of skepticism and a dose of courage coursing through her veins. She waved off these spine-tingling tales as inventions of overly active imaginations.

However, her skepticism soon started to erode as she began to experience peculiar occurrences that she could not ascribe to the realm of the ordinary. The house, it seemed, was inherently wired with an inexplicable essence of something unworldly.

Doors would open and close on their own accord as though controlled by unseen hands. No corner of the house was devoid of eerie knocking sounds, which always resounded without a discernible source. It was as if invisible entities had taken up residence alongside Addams, playing out their earthly habits.

Part 3 – Encounters Beyond the Living

Amongst these strange incidents, one particularly unsettling encounter had seized her. Addams reported seeing an apparition of a woman. The form was familiar in its anonymity, almost as if Addams could feel the essence of its past life – the tragedy, the unsettled soul.

Many believed this apparition was none other than the spirit of Jenny Adams, the first lady of the manor, whose mortal existence had been abruptly severed. Did her soul linger, tethered to the Hull House, stuck in an endless loop replaying its past life? The line between the worldly and the supernatural seemed to blur further with each passing day.

Whether it was the dwelling of phantom residents or merely a hotbed for vivid imaginations, the Hull House had had its narrative intricately woven with threads of unexplainable encounters and uncanny sightings.

Perhaps, the specter of Jenny Adams, restrained by the unseen chains of her past, still roams the ancient corridors of the house. Or perhaps, she exists merely as a fabrication of those seeking to infuse the concrete world with a touch of spectral intrigue.

Part 5 – An Enduring Legacy

The Hull House stands today, stoic, preserving its eerie legacy while life buzzes around it. Call it a cursed house, a phantom mansion, or a simple trick of the mind; the Hull House’s narrative has entrenched itself into the annals of history, standing as a testament to the inexplicable mysteries that lie within the realm of the unknown.

Phantom Of The Chicago Theater — Chicago, Il

Chapter One: Spotlight on the Specter

On Michigan Avenue in the steely heart of the Windy City hums a magnificent structure known as the Chicago Theater. She’s a grand old dame, rising from the city streets with an aura of sophisticated grace, echoing whispers of her bygone era. But beneath this kaleidoscope of city lights and historical richness hides a spectral secret – a resident ghost that etches chills down the spine of those lucky, or unlucky, enough to cross paths with it.

Since the red velvet curtains unveiled their first dramatic treat, tales of inexplicable occurrences have trickled down the grapevine of the theater’s folklore. It all seemed to hinge on a tragic demise of one of their very own – an unassuming stagehand who was savagely ripped from the living world. The man left behind more than just his unfinished life; he left an imprint, an echo, that continues to dance in the age-old theater. Phantom Of The Chicago Theater — Chicago, Il

Chapter Two: A Symphony of Scares

With a fondness for theatrics, the ghost of the stagehand manifests his presence in various bone-chilling ways. Many theater-goers and employees alike have recounted their encounters with the phantom in nerve-wracking detail. As with any accomplished performer, he seems to relish the anticipation, cultivating a suspenseful atmosphere before his eerie debut.

The hair-raising show typically begins with horrifying incongruities: the flicker of a bulb struggling against an unseen specter, a deathly chill sweeping across spots that were moments ago basking in warmth, echoing sounds that defy explanation, reverberating through the darkened hallways. Even the air itself becomes a participant in the spectral play, a sudden, chilling drop in temperature signaling the ghost’s ominous arrival. Phantom Of The Chicago Theater — Chicago, Il

Chapter Three: Intermission Intrigues

The phantom is not a mere trickster. His presence is not confined to the dim corners of the stage or the backstage labyrinth. Has there been a lull in the chilling episodes, a brief bout of silence? Worry not, for our ghostly actor knows well how to pop back into the limelight.

Just when complacency begins to wash over the unsuspecting guests, their senses would be ripped back to heightened alertness. Anomalous thumps and bangs puncture the tranquility of intermissions. An icy touch brushes past a face in the crowded foyer. The quicksilver-like flicker of an ethereal figure at the corner of an eye unsettles the most hardened hearts. Such is the expertise of this ghost of high drama, delivering his frigid performance just before the pivotal moments of the live show. Phantom Of The Chicago Theater — Chicago, Il

Chapter Four: Behind the Spectral Scenes

Deeper into the eerie labyrinth of the theatre, beyond the glimmer of the chandeliers and the comfort of the velvet upholstery, awaits an unexplored dimension. Here, in the territory of the phantom, lights flicker as if in a constant struggle with invisible currents. Shadows sway and dart behind the mammoth props and towering backdrops, adding to the unsettling charm of the place.

The velvety darkness seemed as if it could, at any moment, unveil the diaphanous form of the phantom, his ghastly figure illuminated under the stage spotlight. There’s an occasional breath of icy wind, enough to chill the warmest soul, that cannot be attributed to the weather. One might hear an occasional disembodied whisper too, breaking the gloom with its echo.” Phantom Of The Chicago Theater — Chicago, Il

Chapter Five: The Haunting Finale

The phantom of the Chicago Theater holds us in his thrall with his unscheduled performances. Even though the final act shuttered long back, nobody ever really left. The old walls, the aging curtains, the creaking floorboards; they all reverberate with the specter’s eerie essence.

As the audience trickles out into the damp Chicago night, the hum of their chatter fading, the spectral artist retreats into the cavernous theatre’s shadows. He’s put on another grisly act, his phantom tale etched on every inch of the place – until the next time the lights flicker and the curtains rise.

Be it the stagehand and his tragic tale, or the specter of the Chicago Theater with his spectral performances, both will always haunt the theater. The ghastly tale of this ghostly tapestry will be there to chill and thrill, to scare and delight, to hold you in an icy grip until the encore. True or not, the legend is etched into the eerie ethos of this historic city marvel – forever. Phantom Of The Chicago Theater — Chicago, Il

An invisible presence clings to the inner fabric and coldly caresses the skin as one explores the inner confines of the house. Even the bravest man’s resolve threatens to flee his body, replaced by icy terror when his gaze meets the eyes of the phantom residents that still haunt the house.

Chapter Two: Doorway to the Damned

Perhaps the house’s most terrifying aspect lays in the upstairs window – an oculus into the abyss. Visitors with staunch hearts and iron nerves have reported catching glimpses of a nefarious entity. Chapter Three: The Legend of the Devil Baby

Every haunted house has a legend, and the Hull House is no different. It hums the dirge of the ‘Devil Baby’ – a child tainted by darkness, an aberration spawned by unspoken evil lurking in the corners of normality.

It is said that this child was born with horns and a twisted tail, a monstrosity hidden away in the attic by its horror-stricken parents. The rhythmic thumping that visitors occasionally report, eerily resonates from the attic, serving as a terrifying reminder of the legend. But when the nocturnal silence of the neighborhood is pierced by the disturbingly childlike laughter, chills run down the spine only to nestle deep within the heart.

Epilogue: A Legacy of Fear

The Hull House, much like a nightmarish specter, refuses to be exorcised from the city’s consciousness. Whether the tales, ghostly sightings, and disturbing sounds amount to anything beyond chilling folklore and urban legend, is a debate that has survived for decades.

What is certain is that this house predicates an ominous and frightful feeling. Its aura spews out into the streets and alleyways, infecting the consciousness of those who dare to skirt too close to its haunted edges.

Experts, enthusiasts, skeptics, or mere curious souls looking forward to a thrilling adventure — all tread lightly in the Hull House. Its eerie atmosphere, terrifying legends, and ghostly anomalies have etched themselves deep within its framework — a chilling testament to its enduring reign amongst the most haunted places in Chicago.

The Terrifying Tale Of The Eastland Disaster Ghosts — Chicago, Il

Section 1

The late afternoon sun, bleeding crimson and periwinkle over the Chicago skyline, beat down lethargically on the S.S Eastland. The mammoth vessel reclined serenely at the dock on July 24, 1915, a steamer so immense, it seemed to challenge the sky. An air of tenderness permeated around it as it readied itself to ferry employees of the Western Electric Company’s Hawthorne Plant to their company picnic.

The prospect of a day filled with joy was reflected in the sun-kissed faces and sparkly eyes of the anticipant passengers, their hearts reverberating with a shared rhythm of delight. Unbeknownst to them, they were earning themselves a one-way ticket to the underworld, and the boat, as it were, was more akin to Charon’s ferry.

The picnic was a coveted event, an opportunity to escape the clawing monotony of everyday bustling life, and taste the sweet delicacy of leisure. But the promise of fun evaporated in an instant when the ship, burdened by the weight of the eager souls aboard, tragically capsized, trapping over 800 passengers under its cold iron belly.

The Terrifying Tale Of The Eastland Disaster Ghosts — Chicago, Il

Section 2

What followed was nothing short of a horrific nightmare, a moment frozen in time for the city of Chicago. In response to the emergency, the 2nd Regiment Armory, a strapping imposing stone structure, was converted into a temporary morgue.

In the labyrinthine silence of the echoey halls, one could hear the soft, disconsolate sobs of grieving relatives, huddled around their dearly departed. The eyes of the dead, vacant yet accusing, stared into the nothingness, becoming the mirror that reflected a sea of tragic stories.

As if the walls of the Armory absorbed the misery and despair that had gripped the city, something wicked was set in motion. Something ominously spectral took birth, forever linking this modern world to a timeless netherworld. Thus, it was that the building was shown to have a monstrous, frightening duality, being the 2nd Regiment Armory in the light of day and morphing into a cauldron of unsettling intrigue after twilight.

The Terrifying Tale Of The Eastland Disaster Ghosts — Chicago, Il

Section 3

The Armory’s transformation into the Harpo Studios did little to wash away the macabre association. As years tiptoed past the incident, silent whispers began to circulate among the studio workers. They spoke of sightings of ghostly apparitions and unexplained voices which would morph into anguished screams that raced each other down the lonely corridors.

Flickering lights, strange draughts, and shadows tracing themselves in the whispering silence became daily encounters. Could these manifestations be the work of spirits unsettled? Spirits experiencing an eternal limbo in their quest for retribution?

Were these spectral anomalies perhaps the souls of the Eastland Disaster victims, still trapped within the studio’s stonewalls, still replaying their final, tragic moments? The rumors grew wings, flew around the city, settling on every listening ear, creating a symphony of haunting tales that was unmistakably macabre.

The Terrifying Tale Of The Eastland Disaster Ghosts — Chicago, Il

Section 4

As the sun set, swallowing the light of the day, the spirits would awaken from their slumber, performing their nightly ritual. Objects would shift location mysteriously, doors would creak open without a nudge, and revelers walking past the studio swore they could hear the faint and distant shrill laughter of children, an eerie photo echo of them playing before the deadly sojourn.

The temperature would abruptly plunge into an unnatural chill, icy fingers of supernatural apparitions painting cold dread on the souls of unlucky spectators. Even fearless skeptics couldn’t brush aside the overbearing notion that they were unwelcome observers in a ghostly theater that painted a harsh, spine-chilling reminder of the grim disaster.

The Terrifying Tale Of The Eastland Disaster Ghosts — Chicago, Il

Section 5

And so, the echoes of the Eastland Disaster lived on, resonating hauntingly within the heart of Chicago. Time, the presumed helmsman of healing, appeared to have stood still within the hallowed walls of what was once the 2nd Regiment Armory and later the Harpo Studios.

Each spectral anomaly was like a horrifying brush stroke on the canvas of memory, a chilling notation in the diary of the city’s heart. The shadows seem almost alive, bringing with them a haunting chill of death and despair. They dance a macabre waltz amongst the living, composing an unending elegy for the lost souls who perished on that awful day in July 1915.

By recounting this hair-raising tale, we not only acknowledge the lingering horrors of that disaster but also attest our collective fascination with the spectral world and its inexplicable ways. The echoes from the past continue to reverberate, reminding us of an unfortunate voyage between the earthly world and the realms beyond.

Section 1: Spirit in white

The Rise Of Resurrection Mary — Chicago, Il

The accursed, battered streets of Chicago widened as the city insomniac danced in the eerie darting of translucent moonlight. The year was 1931 and the bustling city pulsated beneath its blanket of looming sooty skyscrapers and dim-lit salty taverns. Among its countless inhabitants resided a radiant damsel named Mary; a sapphire-eyed lass, with hair spun from the purest golden silk.

She was the belle of every gathering, garbed in her signature white dress that shimmered under the flickering show lights. On this ill-fated night, Mary found herself dancing away in the O’Henry Ballroom; a vaulting citadel of mirth and laughter where joy bubbled like champagne in a glass tower.

With her dancing shoes on, Mary whirled amidst the infectious rhythm steaming from the jazz trumpet’s throat. Oblivious then, of the uncanny shadow inching its way into her life’s cataclysmic trajectory.

Section 2: An unbearable farewell

The Rise Of Resurrection Mary — Chicago, Il

Post the midnight’s ecstatic waltz, it was a lonely walk to the house. The temperature had plummeted, nudging Mary to hitch a ride back home. Alas! Fate had decreed a more sinister turn of events. A reckless driver, blindsided by the welling mist, smote her delicately petite form, sealing the poor maiden’s untimely rendezvous with death.

The news of her demise was a chilling memento of life’s impermanence, echoing through the concrete veins of the city. She was mourned and duly buried in the Resurrection Cemetery, her cold body adorned by that white dress and the dancing shoes that held remnants of her last joyous night.

What could have ended there as another isolated incident in Chicago’s daily litany of tragedies, proved to open a new doorway into the realms of the unknown, turning exponentially macabre.

Section 3: The haunted rides

The Rise Of Resurrection Mary — Chicago, Il

Numerous motorists frequenting Archer Avenue reported strange encounters that sent bone-chilling jolts down their spines. They spoke of a hitchhiking woman in ethereal white, who bore a striking resemblance to the deceased Mary. Stories ran rampant of these drivers who conveyed the spectral woman close to the Resurrection Cemetery, only for her to vanish abruptly, much to their heart-stopping disbelief.

Their destination was none other than the infamous Congress Plaza Hotel, a place where bone-chilling stories of ghostly presence hung around like an unfading mist.

*The Windy City* carried an air of eerie anticipation, amplified by the silence that descended just after midnight. The night was dark, moon hiding behind the clouds, and the winds were playing their haunting tune. II. Exploration

Once inside the opulent building, the friends could almost touch the rich history saturated in its polished wooden panels, brass fixtures, and grand paintings — all hushed witnesses to the ghostly spectacles within these six walls. Since the hotel had opened in 1893, it had absorbed countless stories within its confines, and each member of the group secretly hoped they might meet one of these tales face to face, particularly that of Capone. They arrived at the eighth floor, its darkened corridor imbued with an intimidating sense of intensity, almost as if the air here retained a touch of the terror conveyed in the stories.

Around midnight, strange things began to occur. A sudden chill crawled its way down their spines, almost as if the temperature had dropped. Lights flickered bizarrely, rekindling tales of spectral sightings associated with this floor.

Suddenly, they noticed a silhouette against the dimly lit hallway. It was a man dressed in dated attire, fit for a mob boss. His face, though faint, bore the trademark expressions reflecting Capone’s infamous photographs from the roaring twenties. The friends gasped collectively as they realized that the legend was not merely a tale; it was an eerie reality unfolding in front of their eyes.

IV. Conclusion

The man strolled nonchalantly down the hallways, his spectral figure flickering like uncertain candlelight. Though they wished to approach the phantom, an intangible force seemed to prevent their movement—binding them in creepy fascination. Then, just as enigmatically as he had appeared, the figure was gone, disappearing into thin air.

With their heartbeats slowly returning to normal, realizing the legend’s validity, the friends shared a look of terror and awe. Their visit to the Congress Plaza Hotel had indeed turned out to be a night of haunted discoveries—an experience that’d forever be etched in their minds.

The spectral stories of the Congress Plaza Hotel are more than just bedtime tales, they are a chilling tryst with the chilling supernatural world. And Al Capone, who once ruled the underbelly of Chicago, now seems to rule the uncanny night here, wandering forever in the spectral recesses of the aged hotel. Murder Castle – Chicago Illinois

During the 1893 Columbian Exposition there was a doctor who opened his home as a hotel for visitors to the infamous World’s Fair.

Herman Webster Mudgett better known as Dr. Howard Henry Holmes was the first and one of the most sadistic American serial killers. The aforementioned hotel was built and designed by Holmes specifically to facilitate his heinous addiction to torture and murder.

The castle was three stories high and took up an entire block. Located on the ground floor of the Castle was Holmes’ own relocated drugstore and various stores. The upper two floors contained his personal office and a labyrinth of over a hundred dark and closed in rooms with doorways opening to brick walls, oddly-angled hallways, stairways that led to blank walls, doors that could only open from the outside, and a host of other strange and elaborate constructions. Holmes purposefully changed builders during the creation of the Castle, so only he would fully understood the design of the structure.

Most of Holme’s victims were female amongst his employees, as well as lovers and hotel guests. Some of the victims were locked in soundproof bedrooms which had gas lines installed that would allow him to asphyxiate them at any time. There were also victims which were locked in a huge soundproof bank vault near his office, where they were left to suffocate. After torture and death, a lot of the bodies were dropped by secret chute to the basement where they were meticulously dissected, stripped of flesh into skeleton models, and then sold to medical schools. Through the connections he had gained in medical school, he sold skeletons and organs with little difficulty. Now, why wouldn’t this have raise an eyebrow?

Holmes Hotel of Doom

He was also known to have cremated some of the bodies or placed them in lime pits for destruction. The castle included two giant furnaces as well as pits of acid, bottles of various poisons, and even a gruesome stretching rack.

The castle is long gone today, said to have burned to the ground and Holmes was ‘hanged till the death’ as punishment from trial.

The grounds where the castle once stood (63rd and Wallace) are now occupied by a US post office. There are persistent reports of poltergeist activity as the Post Office basement shares an left-over portion of the castle basement including a tunnel and trap-door.

Workers have reported hearing voices and screams, some even refuse to go down into the basement without knowledge of the previous residence.

Meet the Ghosts of Chicago’s Bachelor’s Grove

By Michael Kleen

Bachelor’s Grove in the southwest Chicago suburb of Midlothian has been an enigma for over three decades, but like most such locations, it started out with a mundane existence.  Over one hundred years ago, picnickers dressed in their Sunday best lounged under oak trees in the park-like atmosphere of the cemetery.  Two of the grove’s neighbors heated their small homes with coal burning stoves and drew water out of their brick wells, while horse drawn buggies trotted down the dirt road.  It was a much different scene from today.

Much of the origins of Bachelor’s Grove have been obscured by the passage of time.  Even its name is a mystery.  Some say it was named after a group of single men who settled in the area around the 1830s, but a family named Batchelder already owned the land.  According to Ursula Bielski, author of Chicago Haunts, the cemetery itself was originally named Everdon’s.  Its first burial was in 1844, and the cemetery eventually contained eighty-two plots.

In the early half of the twentieth century, the Midlothian Turnpike ran past the cemetery, over the stream, and beyond.  Today, the broken road appears to end at the cemetery gates, but closer inspection of a long ridge across from the stream reveals a roadbed that has been nearly reclaimed by the forest.  The road was closed in the 1960s.  Locals say that was when the trouble started.

According to the Chicago Tribune’s Jason George, the body of a teenage girl was found in the woods in 1966, and in 1988 a man, who had been murdered by a former girlfriend, was found in the cemetery.  Aside from those gruesome incidents, grave desecration regularly occurred.  Bodies were dug up, animals were sacrificed, and headstones were moved or stolen.

Then the ghosts came.

One of the most controversial sightings involved a phantom house.  In the 1970s, Richard T. Crowe, a local ghost enthusiast, collected stories from dozens of eyewit-nesses who claimed to have seen a white farmhouse complete with a glowing light in the window at various places in the woods alongside the trail.  However, “there is no house on the property, nor anywhere near the site,” Ursula Bielski wrote.  “No property records exist to suggest that there ever was.” (Haunts, pg. 59)  She does mention that “most anyone familiar with the area will offer to show you the foundations of a house that they claim did exist.” (Haunts, pg. 61)

“Claim” is an interesting choice of words, since there are in fact two separate foundations, one east of the cemetery and one west of it.  Although the two are hidden in plain sight, both of them are very real.  As www.bachelors grove.com has well documented, there also exists two wells near these foundations.  Hundreds of visitors have probably seen these and later reported them as “houses.”  Time and imagination took care of the rest.

Another popular ghost is the White Lady, or Madonna, of Bachelor’s Grove.  Cemeteries in the Chicagoland area are overpopulated with these women, who are almost always searching for their lost infants.  Bachelor’s Grove contains a monument to an unnamed ‘infant daughter,’ which has become a shrine for visitors and adds fuel to the story.  This ghost, or one very much like it, was supposedly captured on a now famous photograph taken using infrared film.  Unfortunately, the “ghost” in the picture casts a shadow on the headstone she sits upon, suggesting that she is not very transparent; at least not in the way ghosts tend to be.

Visitors also commonly report seeing orbs or ghost lights, a staple of haunted locations everywhere.  These bright will o’ the wisps are patriotic, appearing in red, white, and blue colors.  Although I have been to the cemetery nearly a dozen times, I have yet to see one.

The pond adjacent to the cemetery has its own share of legends.  Stories say it was one of the hundreds of places scattered around Illinois where mobsters dumped their victims during the roaring ‘20s.  One of these victims apparently grew a second head and has been known to crawl out of the water.  Lastly, a number of years ago a policeman reportedly saw the apparition of a horse, followed by a man and a plow, walk out of the pond and cross 143rd Street.  The ghost is said to belong to a farmer who drowned in the pond when his horse decided to take a swim one day.

Disappearing cars, sometimes sleek, black 1920s and 30s style, or the sounds of car doors slamming, have been reported along that stretch of 143rd Street.  Richard T. Crowe has written that he personally witnessed two of these phantom automobiles.
Although the number of visitors to Bachelor’s Grove has declined, and vandalism has trickled off (there isn’t much left to vandalize), the curious still routinely travel to Midlothian to snap pictures, leave cryptic notes, or place offerings at the stone of the infant daughter.

If you are in the area, check it out. Parking is available at the Forest Preserve across the street, but it is closed after dark – no exceptions. For more information on Bachelor’s Grove, and other haunted locations around Illinois, visit The Legends and Lore of Illinois.
